Access to Affordable Healthcare

As one of the largest distributors of medications and a significant provider of community health services, we believe WBA not only has the opportunity but the responsibility to make an impact in healthcare access and affordability through our business and advocacy.

Health Education and Prevention

Our compassion and capabilities extend far beyond our home countries. To stay dedicated to health and education around the world, we partner with government agencies and nonprofit organizations to keep patients informed and support them with preventative screenings, free flu shots and other health services.

HIV Testing

In 2011, Walgreens partnered with the Greater Than AIDS campaign to launch a program turning stores into HIV testing centers. Patients receive onsite testing and results delivered by trained counselors and testing partners, who can then educate them about different treatment options and benefits. Over nine years, the in-store testing program has grown to be the largest coordinated annual HIV testing event of its kind in the U.S.

Supporting Individuals With Dementia

Since 2014, Boots UK has worked with Dementia Friends, an Alzheimer’s Society initiative dedicated to driving dementia awareness and changing perceptions of the condition. In every Boots store in Great Britain, there is at least one Dementia Friend who has a deep understanding of what it’s like to live with dementia. By wearing a simple badge, they make themselves available to help Boots shoppers feel safe, calm and comfortable in store.

Flu Vaccines

Walgreens is proud to collaborate with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to offer free flu shots for veterans. By connecting with Veterans Affairs, we are able to easily serve hundreds of thousands of veterans right in their own communities. And, for those in the U.S. and Puerto Rico who are uninsured or underinsured, we’ve created a simple and easy voucher system?to make flu shots more accessible.

Our Focus on Cancer

For cancer patients, meaningful support is about much more than providing medicine. That’s why WBA developed three key priorities for our focus on cancer: assisting people living with cancer, working with organizations that advance research and supporting prevention programs.

The Collaboration for Cancer Prevention, Research and Support

In 2019, we formed a transatlantic charitable partnership with?Macmillan Cancer Support,?Susan G. Komen,?The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS)?and the?European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC), founding The Collaboration for Cancer Prevention, Research and Support. Together, we work on larger initiatives to develop and support innovative cancer research, as well as enable sharing of best practices in patient-centered care.

Advancing Research

Across the world, there are many groups devoted to funding cancer research, but rare cancers don’t always have the highest?visibility, and don’t get a share of funding.

That’s why WBA and the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) established a second five-year agreement in 2018. Together, we work to expand SPECTA (Screening Patients for Efficient Clinical Trial Access) to address previously overlooked types of cancer, including breast cancer and rare childhood cancers.

As one of the leading infrastructures for clinical cancer research in Europe, and with support from the European Union and its member states, SPECTA has served as a platform for research into rare solid cancers in adults for many years. To support its ongoing research, WBA committed to raising €5 million by 2023 so that people living with these rare cancers can receive better treatment and ultimately, a better quality of life.

Collaborating to Conquer Blood and Breast Cancers

To fuel research?into tough-to-treat cancers and enable quality improvement in healthcare, Walgreens has announced a new collaboration with Susan G. Komen and LLS. Through a combination of corporate donations and in-store fundraising, Walgreens will contribute more than $25 million to its partners by 2025. The commitment will support new research in blood and breast cancers, as well as increase access and support for those living with these diseases.?
